The birthday celebration of the year

You may have spotted the adorable Quokka joeys peeping out of their mums’ pouches throughout winter and come spring, they’re ready to hop out into the big wide world. Now that’s cause for celebration!

Join us as we welcome the newest generation of Quokkas with activities all September long, from wildlife tours to photography workshops and a self-guided treasure hunt. We’re also hosting a special birthday party event on 19 September!

The events are free to attend, but registration is required.

Eco Boat Joy Rides

Jump onboard for a free 15-minute thrilling boat ride. The ultimate thrill to get pulses racing and into the Quokka Birthday spirit. (Not suitable for children under 4 years old)

West Oz

West Oz Wildlife are so passionate about wildlife education and conservation. Come and hear them speak about all things Quokkas!

The Wadumbah Dance Group

Main Stage 12pm - 12:30pm
Joey's Nook 1:15pm-2pm

The internationally acclaimed Wadumbah Dance Group will be showcasing traditional Aboriginal dance, music and storytelling in two special performances throughout the day.

Quokka Hop
Walking Tours

10am to 2pm (every hour)
Meet at the Rottnest Volunteer Guides Information Booth and take a guided walk around the Settlement to learn about the life of the Quokkas.

Quokka Shop

Party Central 10am to 3pm
Head to the pop-up Quokka Shop at the Rottnest Foundation marquee or the Salt Store to pick up some limited edition quokka-themed items, from eye masks and playing cards to plush toys and lots more.

Arts & Craft Activities

Party Central 10am to 3pm
Enjoy rock painting and learn how to make traditional Noongar art, decorate Aboriginal artefacts or make your own colourful Quokka mask.

Kingdom of the Quokka Screening

Picture Hall 10am, 12pm and 2pm
Settle in at the Picture Hall to watch Rottnest Island: Kingdom of the Quokka. The documentary reveals the secret life of Quokkas, along with the incredible story of the lifecycles of the other wildlife on the Island.

Sandcastle Building & Workshops

North Thomson Beach 10am to 3pm
Professional sand sculptor and artist, Jenny the Sandcastle Girl and her team will create a special Quokka Birthday party castle and help kids to create their very own sand sculpture.

Storytelling Time

Joey's Nook 10:30am and 2:45pm
How did Quokkas get to Rottnest? For sure they didn’t swim, but Storyteller Glenn Swift thinks he knows another way they came. Glenn’s stories are suitable for all ages, and you can get up and help act them out if you like!

Quokka Questions
with the Rottnest Rangers

Main Stage 11:15am to 11:45am
Learn what a ‘Day in the Life’ of a Rottnest Island Ranger looks like, including how they take care of the Island’s unique flora and fauna. Our Rangers will also be roving the party area throughout the day, ready to answer your questions about Quokkas and more. .

Your presence is enough of a present for our friends, the Quokkas! But if you'd like to leave a little message or a warm wish, you can do so on our giant birthday card.

Sing Happy Birthday to the Quokkas

Main Stage 2pm
It wouldn’t be a birthday party without a group singalong to wish our little friends many happy returns for the year ahead.


Party Central 10am-3pm
Quokka hop through the obstacle course and try to beat the clock by jumping, dodging, sliding, climbing and leaping through various obstacles, testing your agility!
